Revitalising Microsoft

To revitalise Microsoft, various radical measures had been proposed. Raj Reddy, a well known professor of computer science and robotics at Carnegie Mellon University , believed that a handful of Microsoft spin-offs, seeded with some of the company's $37.8 billion in cash, could compete more nimbly in the marketplace. Some insiders agreed with this view.

The "Ten Crazy Ideas" memo sent to Gates suggested giving product groups increased autonomy and called for the creation of "bureaucracy police" with the authority to slash through red tape...

The Road Ahead

In the past, whenever Microsoft had faced an emerging threat, Gates had led the company in a new direction. For example, in 1995 he had belatedly recognized the importance of the Internet and led a furious charge to catch up, starting off with his famous tidal wave memo. But in recent times, Microsoft's ability to rebound had not been quite noticeable...
